Hobart Welding School, then known as Hobart Trading School, played an important role in supplying the war effort with skilled welders on the production floor that won the war for the country.

The school rapidly expanded in the post way industrial boom as the demand for welders increased due to the expansion of industry. In 1958, new facilities were built to accommodate the increased demand for welding training at Hobart. The new facility was called Hobart Technical Center and still stands. 1970 saw HIWT receive approval from the Ohio State Board of Career Colleges and Schools. The month of December in the same year also saw the institution change its name to Hobart School of Welding Technology from the previous name of Hobart Trade School. 1972 saw another major milestone for HIWT when it was granted accreditation by the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools. Another major milestone came in 1977 when HIWT became a supporting member of the American Welders Society. The school underwent further remodeling and expansion in the following year, reflecting its importance as a major welding training center amongst aspiring welders. The current name of Hobart Institute of Welding Technology was adopted in 1991. In 2005, the HIWT underwent further renovations and expansion program which saw the construction and the equipping of the facility with some state of the art welding equipment and teaching facilities to meet the demands of the 21st century welding technologies and practice.
